Character Analysis

Emma Edmonds

Emma is the story’s protagonist and, as it begins she’s 21 years old. Small and dark, she has strong facial features and a serious manner. Emma’s childhood was difficult since she suffered constant verbal abuse from her father, who wanted a son. These early experiences of hardship strengthen her resolve to prove herself just and strong and capable as any man.

After fleeing her home in Canada, Emma dresses as a man to escape capture. She comes to realize that this disguise allows her to escape the limited role that society has assigned her as a girl. Passing as a man makes it possible for Emma to enlist in the army. Her dexterity with hiding her gender soon evolves into a talent for creating multiple disguises that she employs as a spy. Emma’s cool-headed courage in spying behind enemy lines earns her the respect of her fellow soldiers and an honored place in Civil War history.

Mrs. Butler

Mrs. Butler is the kindly, middle-aged wife of an army chaplain. Plump and maternal, she’s a comforting figure to Emma while the young woman poses as a soldier. When Emma confesses her identity, Mrs. Butler not only supports Emma’s decision and protects her secret but is instrumental in helping Emma become a spy and even contributes the clothing and props for one of her disguises.
