Plot Summary

Published in 2012, Grave Mercy is a young adult fantasy novel by Robin LaFevers. Set in an alternate 15th century Brittany, the story follows 17-year-old assassin Ismae as she infiltrates the high court of Brittany and—against her better judgment—falls in love with her target. Grave Mercy is the first book in LaFevers' His Fair Assassin series, which was nominated for a Mythopoeic Fantasy Award. LaFevers, who also publishes under the name R.L. LaFevers, is the author of several children's and young adult novels, including the Theodosia series and the Nathaniel Fludd, Beastologist series.

Ismae Rienne is the Daughter of Death. At least, that is what she has been called for as long as she can remember. Her mother tried to abort her before she was born, but because Ismae survived the poison (with a large red scar on her back to show for it), her father and the villagers abuse and fear her. When she turns 14, her father sells her for three coins in an arranged marriage to a pig farmer, but on the wedding night, her new husband sees the scar and realizes she is the Daughter of Death. He becomes enraged and beats her.

Ismae's salvation that night comes at the hands of the hedge priest who officiated their wedding. After her husband locks her in a cellar, the hedge priest, who reveals that he is the same herb witch whose poison was used in her attempted abortion, rescues her and takes her to the convent of St. Mortain. The nuns there still serve the old gods—the most important of which is Mortain, the god of Death.

The nuns reveal that Ismae's scars do indeed show that she is a Daughter of Death. Mortain has blessed Ismae with gifts, such as immunity from poison and the ability to talk to spirits. He has also cursed her with a violent destiny. The nuns give her a choice: if she decides to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and sent to kill those who Mortain has marked. "We are mere instruments of Mortain," the abbess says. "His handmaidens, if you will. We do not decide who to kill or why or when. It is all determined by the god." If Ismae declines the training, she will be sent away to "a kind, gentle man in need of a wife."

"Why be the sheep when you can be the wolf?" Ismae thinks. She chooses to stay, and after three years of training, she is a strong and confident assassin. Never again will a man hold power over her. Yet, she is not satisfied at the convent. She is beginning to see that the nuns are not as infallible as they would like to seem; in addition, the seers suspiciously tend to declare that political targets have been marked by Mortain.

Ismae succeeds in her first two assassinations (traitorous men with political connections) and so is given her third assignment, the most important one so far. The abbess sends her to the high court of Brittany to protect Anne, the duchess, and to eliminate any threats to Anne’s life. Ismae will pose as the mistress of Gavriel Duval, the duchess's illegitimate half brother, to gain entry to the high court. However, she is also given a secret side mission unknown to Gavriel: she must determine whether he is actually a traitor.

Although they are attracted to one another, Ismae and Gavriel initially hate each other. They are both stubborn and confident and determined to carry out their individual missions. Gradually, however, Ismae sees another side to Gavriel. At only 12 years old, Anne is vulnerable, both from a safety perspective and a political perspective. She has many enemies who would love to see her fall so that they can take her place. But Gavriel is loyal to Anne and working hard to ensure a profitable marriage for her—one which will not only provide Anne with a good man for a husband, but will also help secure the Brittany’s independence from France. Therefore, Gavriel is not a traitor, but someone in the high court is attempting to make it look as if he is.

Against the orders of the convent, Ismae joins forces with Gavriel to find a suitable marriage for Anne. Gradually, she realizes she is falling in love with him. During this time, she also begins hunting for the true traitor in the high court. Eventually she learns Chancellor Crunard is sowing false information about Gavriel. As if that is not enough, Crunard has also been slowly poisoning Gavriel. It is then that Ismae learns of another blessing she has received from Death: she has the ability to cure a person of poisoning by having sex with them. She has sex with Gavriel and saves his life.
