Chapter 6 Summary

At Dixon’s party, Chloe and Smith split up to find the note that Shara left for Smith. Chloe finds the note tucked behind a stack of books and a fake plant. Inside she finds a polaroid of Shara and Smith by Dixon’s pool posing for their prom photo. Smith looks “slightly uncomfortable” in the photo. Enclosed is a note indicating that, at the time the photo was taken, Shara believed she and Smith would not make it to graduation as a couple. In the postscript, Shara indicates that Rory should “check the records” and that Chloe would know where they are (79). Chloe decides to remain at Dixon’s party to experience Shara’s social circle.

Chapter 7 Summary

Although Chloe enjoys herself at the party, the night takes a turn when Dixon tells Chloe that “everyone” knows her as “that girl from LA with the huge boobs” (89). To make matters worse, he says, “It’s a compliment! Look, before they came in, everyone just called you a lesbian, so I’d call this an upgrade. You should be proud of them!” (89). Smith promptly defends Chloe and tells him he’s being a “jackass” (89). Smith later shares with Chloe that Dixon has been racist toward him and that he dislikes Dixon.
