Part 6: “Friday” - Part 7: “Saturday”

Part 6, Chapter 20 Summary: “It Was That Boy”

Eva calls her mother, who is surprised to hear from her daughter, since Eva usually only calls on holidays and birthdays. Lizette now runs a pageant consulting business, and she steps away to take the call. Eva asks her if Shane was there, asking to know the real story about what happened that day. Lizette admits that Shane was telling the truth. However, Lizette says, she lied to protect her daughter, and Eva should thank her—this young man had fooled her, kidnapped her, and hurt her. Furious, Eva explains that she was cutting herself and using substances to find relief from her migraines and her life. Lizette suggests houseplants; according to their ancestors, the plants will suck up all the bad juju. Eva accuses her mother of being jealous, and Lizette responds that daughters always blame their mothers for their mess. Angry, Eva hangs up.

Part 6, Chapter 21 Summary: “What A Coincidence”

Now knowing the truth, Eva goes to Shane’s house. Shane admits that he didn’t find her after he was released from jail because she was already a success. He didn’t want to ruin it for her, and he was convinced that he destroyed everything he touched. The couple spend the night together, and Eva invites him to Belle Fleur, Louisiana, while she researches her family history.
