Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 15 Summary

Carter wakes, itchy with mosquito bites, and wakes Jane so that they can start heading back to the boat. They’re starving but relieved to see the low tide and a clear path. Behind the waterfall, Jane notices a cave leading into the rock and suggests that it might be a shortcut. After collecting water, the two climb up into the cave, which quickly becomes pitch black. Jane uses her video camera’s dim light to guide them through it.

Chapter 16 Summary

Vanessa and Buzz search for Carter and Jane, worried that something happened to them. Meanwhile, Carter and Jane slowly trek through the cave, risking the possibility of getting lost among its many turns. As Buzz and Vanessa walk along, they see a cave opening and hear the faint sound of a voice, which they soon realize is Jane’s. They hurry into the cave and start calling for Jane and Carter, who follow the voices to the cave’s exit where Vanessa and Buzz are. Vanessa wraps Carter in her arms, relieved to see him alive, and Carter is happy to see her too but reluctant to express it. In addition, he notices that Jane doesn’t seem scared at all; instead, she seems energized by the cave walk and everything else that’s going on.
