Long Answer

1. Religion is often used as a means to unite people under a given set of rules. However, Aminata’s Islamic faith is something she feels she has to suppress as she assimilates into American culture. Many of the religious people in the novel do unethical things, such as supporting slavery. Even Mr. Lindo, a man of devout Jewish faith, keeps enslaved people and partakes in their sale for his financial gain.

2. He hopes to convince her that he isn’t as guilty as Christian enslavers because Jewish people are often persecuted in America.
