Chapter 13 Summary: “Ann—August 18, 1947”

Mr. Hartnell comes to the embroidery workroom and announces that the queen and Princess Elizabeth have accepted his design for the wedding gown and all the other gowns required for the ceremony. Hartnell and Miss Duley ask Miriam and Ann privately to make the embroidery samples to show the queen. They remind Ann and Miriam that they can’t breathe a word of this to anybody. Every detail of the gown must be kept secret. Ann and Miriam agree that they won’t say anything. Miriam and Ann work on the samples and are so excited they miss their morning break and work until lunch.

At lunch, her coworkers ask Ann about her date with Jeremy. Ann says she didn’t go but doesn’t tell them that, when she called him, a woman answered and told her to stop calling. At supper, Ann and Miriam discuss the samples, and Ann is surprised that Miriam isn’t excited to work on the princess’s wedding gown. Miriam isn’t a fan of royalty, but Ann argues passionately for the crown and how much they do for the country. Miriam concedes that it is a great honor to make the dress. Ann is nervous to work on the project, but Miriam comforts her by saying she is one of the best embroiderers she’s ever worked with.
